Softpedia: Samsung Announces F2FS File System
The F2FS file system is designed to be used on devices, such as SSD, eMMC, and SD cards, especially because they differ so much from the conventional rotational disks.
“F2FS is a new file system carefully designed for the NAND flash memory-based storage devices. We chose a log structure file system approach, but we tried to adapt it to the new form of storage. Also we remedy some known issues of the very old log structured file system, such as snowball effect of wandering tree and high cleaning overhead,” stated Jaegeuk Kim from Samsung.
The F2FS file system has 16 patches, but even if it comes from Samsung, it’s not a guarantee that it will be merged into the main kernel any time soon. More details about the project can be found in the official mailing list.
